TWENTY ONE
Will Garratt rolled off the girl, his body bathed in sweat. On the bedside cabinet were a pack of Lambert and Butler. He removed one, pushed it into his mouth and lit it.
“Didn’t hurt this time, did it?” he asked.
The girl shook her head and smiled, eager to please.
Garratt took the smoke down deep into his lungs and exhaled. “Remember, I told you and your mum that I’d look out for you?”
“I remember,” said the girl in heavily accented English.
“Well, this is where it starts now, Lizbeth. This is where the good life begins for you and your mum. No more problems with the Russians, no more running, no more living in bad places.”
The girl turned on her side and grabbed Garratt’s cigarette.
“Hey,” he said. “You’re not old enough to smoke.”
“In my country, all girls smoke at thirteen,” said Lizbeth, taking a drag and falling back onto her pillow.”
“Well, I’d rather you stopped,” said Garratt, stealing back the cigarette. “The men that I will send you to will not like a girl smelling of tobacco smoke. I told you, they want you to look and act your age. If you do as I say, they will pay good money and you and your Mum will be rich Lizbeth, rich.”
“But I like to smoke, William,” said the girl petulantly. “Maybe I will wear that uniform for the men. The one you bought for me, and that will please them, make them forget the smoke.”
Garratt’s mood turned. Just the way Lizbeth had seen before. His eyes grew dark, like the storm clouds rolling in from the Baltic in winter. His face had lost its flush from the sex, the blood rushing elsewhere to feed his fury. The long ugly pink scar that ran down his cheek, standing out angrily against his pallor.
Lizbeth was very scared. The last time she had seen William in this mood was over a month ago when he had beaten her mother so badly that she needed to visit the hospital.
Lizbeth felt Garratt’s left hand grip her throat. He held her so tight, she thought she would never take another breath. In his right, he held the cigarette. He took the longest pull on it, ensuring the tip was glowing as red as the Russian flag, then held it to her cheek. She could feel the embers against her pale flawless skin.
“Please, Will…” she croaked. “Please don’t burn me.”
Garratt whispered. His words, calm yet menacing. The smoke falling from his mouth like a ghostly waterfall.
“I will push this fucking tip into your eyeball and boil your stupid brain if you ever go against what I say again…understand?”
Lizbeth did her best to nod. “Yes… sorry William… sorry.”
Garratt released the girl, sat up and stubbed out the cigarette on a nearby plate.
“That’s better,” he said, his temper subsiding. “Now, go and change into that uniform, and put your hair into pigtails, the way I showed you… I want to take your picture.”
